A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on recently seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
