The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
